first_img Brad James FacebookTwitterLinkedInEmailPROVO, Utah-This week, BYU basketball brought in a pair of standout Utah recruits as new Cougars head coach Mark Pope seeks to bolster his recruiting class.Wasatch Academy shooting guard Richie Saunders chose the Cougars over offers from Big East program Creighton of Omaha, Neb. Utah State and Pac-12 schools Oregon State and Utah.The 6-5 180-pound Mt. Pleasant native is a top 150 recruit, per 247sports.com.He will be joined by Salt Lake Community College redshirt wing Spencer Johnson, who committed last week.Johnson, a former American Fork High School star, is the nephew of Mid-Utah Radio talent J.D. Fox who has also played at Weber State.He also spent some time at Utah Valley playing for Pope and then decided to join his former Wolverines head coach and staff at BYU after they offered him a scholarship.Johnson, after sitting out a year per NCAA Division I rules, will have three years of eligibility for the Cougars when he officially arrives on campus in 2020.The 6-5 Johnson will primarily play shooting guard for the Cougars.
