Outdoor Updates: Grandmother moves into tree in an attempt to stop the Mountain Valley Pipeline

first_imgGrandmother moves into tree in an attempt to stop the Mountain Valley Pipeline Blue crabs are making a comeback in the Chesapeake Bay The EPA will stop funding for a network of research centers responsible for studying environmental threats to children’s health, putting at risk a series of long-running studies that look at pollution’s long-term effect on children. There are 13 Children’s Environmental Health and Disease Prevention Research Centers across the U.S. that are jointly funded by the EPA and the Department of Health and Human Services’ National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. For more than 20 years the research centers have studied things like childhood leukemia, maternal health and autism. The existing funding for the centers is set to run out by the end of the year and many of the center’s programs are now scrambling to make up the funding shortfall. Critics call the move a part of the Trump administration’s effort to downplay science that could lead to stricter pollution regulations. EPA ends funding for kids’ health research centerscenter_img A 44-year-old grandmother in Montgomery County, Va has taken up residence in a tree near Elliston, Va to protest the Mountain Valley Pipeline. The tree sits in the path of the pipeline, which will run 303 miles from northwestern West Virginia to southern Virginia. Crystal Jean Mello, a mother of two and grandmother of one, climbed the tree last Saturday. She says she has lived in Southwest Virginia for most of her life and, according to Appalachians Against Pipelines (AAP), is concerned about the destruction at the hands of the pipeline company, calling recent protests and ended in felony charges against the protestors “intimidation tactics.” “They want to call these young people terrorists? Well, I’m Nana, and a cleaning lady, and I stand with them,” Mello told the AAP. “They want us to be hopeless and feel like big business will always win. But we can all do little things and create big change together. Change that can beat this pipeline. We are still here.” An annual survey of blue crabs in the Chesapeake Bay shows that the crustacean has reached the highest population in seven years. The healthy crab population rose 60 percent in the last year to reach an estimated 594 million crabs. A winter survey showed twice as many juvenile crabs this year than last year and spawning-age female crabs have increased by 30 percent. Strict harvesting restrictions were put in place in Maryland and Virginia in 2008 after the blue crab population fell to troubling lows. Efforts to reduce pollution in the watershed have also contributed to the growing population numbers. “The blue crab population is both healthy and thriving,” Maryland’s natural resources Secretary said in a statement. “Which is great news for the entire bay.” last_img read more

Bekele breaks Farah’s London half-marathon record

first_img“I’m on schedule in my preparation for the London Marathon in April.“There’s no question about the crowds in London being great. They were cheering all around the course and it felt like a great place to be.”Farah decided to concentrate on the marathon having won gold in the 5,000 metres and 10,000 metres at both the London and Rio Games, but a relative lack of success on the road has seen him turn his attention back to the track ahead of this year’s Olympics in Tokyo.jdg/lpShare on: WhatsApp Bekele is backLondon, United Kingdom | AFP |  Ethiopia’s Kenenisa Bekele broke Mo Farah’s course record as he won the London half-marathon on Sunday in a time of one hour and 22 seconds.Bekele took 1min 18sec off the record set in 2019 by British distance great Farah, who missed this year’s edition with an achilles injury.Britain’s Christopher Thompson finished second, with Jake Smith third.Sunday’s event served as a warm-up event for the full London Marathon on April 26. That race is set to see Bekele go up against Eliud Kipchoge, the reigning Olympic champion from Kenya, as the two fastest marathon runners of all time meet in the British capital.“The new course record is a great bonus. I wasn’t focused on time today, I just wanted to win,” Bekele, three times an Olympic gold medallist on the track, told the BBC.last_img read more

Inside Conditions…The more things change, the more they remain the same

first_img(Bradenton, Fla.)—Today is March 11, 2013 my 60th birthday or as former President of the United States the late Franklin Delano Roosevelt would say, “a day in infamy.”  Just the day before I, arrived in Tampa Bay and spent the day with my cousin Dr. Ramon Bruce, freshly retired from the Veterans Administration. “Doc” Bruce is a gentleman and a scholar who received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Auburn; I offered him my condolences with a smile. The genealogy of Dr. Bruce springs from the Bruce Tuskegee lineage; but you know what? Baseball and sports are like families in many ways, the more things change, the more things stay the same. Many things have changed since I began to cover MLB many years ago. I won’t say what year it was because it would be telling my age. Oops my bad, I already told my age.  However I continue to feel sorta, kinda lonely “upstairs” because  on this particular afternoon there is not one, not one speck of color in the press box besides me, oh except for the janitor. Sometimes it gets lonesome here at the top and believe me “being at the top” does not mean anything arrogant, insolent or egotistical; I am just stating the obvious. I am at the bottom rung of those who sit up top. Don’t try to blame this “continuing phenomenon” on anyone or anything because this is not the fault of MLB; but please answer this one question for me. Where in the hell are all of the professional baseball writers?  I know when teams from “chocolate cities” compete there are writers with more than ample amounts of “melanin” sprinkled throughout the “box.”  When I awoke at the crack of dawn semi-lamenting my charge into my sixties, I realize the more things change, the more they remain the same.  At this point the boys of summer are now the boys of semi-spring. They are ugly caterpillars ready to emerge from the cocoon of the losing. Pirates’ pitcher Jeff Locke who came over from the Atlanta Braves entered the game with a 2-1 record and a 3.60 ERA starting 3 games so far in the Pirates “grapefruit league” season. Even though his location wasn’t as sharp as he would have liked it to be he remained optimistic. “Since I have come over [from the Braves] everything has been better, from my routine, to my work ethic.” he said. “Maybe I was younger over there, now I’m maturing.” AUBREY BRUCElast_img read more

SA to build 200 000 houses in two years

first_img27 February 2014 The South African government will build 216 000 houses and connect 905 000 households to electricity over the next two years, Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan told Parliament on Wednesday. This is in addition to other housing schemes the state has embarked on in partnership with the private sector and public-private development institutions. Delivering his fifth Budget speech in Cape Town, Minister Gordhan said the housing budget for the 2013/14 financial year was R143-billion. Between 1994 and 2013, the government built over 2.7-million houses across South Africa. The National Development Plan (NDP) recommends that responsibility for housing shift to the country’s municipalities in order to improve coordination. All metro municipalities have been directed to implement housing programmes. The Human Settlements spending focus over the next two years will be on transferring grants to provinces and municipalities to fund the delivery of low-income housing, the purchase of land to upgrade informal settlements, and the upgrade of some informal settlements, Gordhan said. The urban settlements development grant is expected to deliver more than 215 000 housing units and upgrade 92 000 services sites in informal settlements. The integrated city development grant, which is being introduced in this year’s Budget, will ensure that large, low-income communities on the urban edge are better connected to centres of economic and social activity through investments in public transport. The Treasury says municipalities will receive the grants on condition that they produce built environment plans and that these plans support better coordination of investments and are aligned to national development plans. Silva – We lost our focus

first_imgEverton manager Marco Silva rues his side’s lack of concentration after they managed to draw 2-2 against Watford despite taking an early lead.Richarlison gave Everton the lead in the 15th minute, but Coleman’s own goal and Doucoure’s header completed the comeback for Watford within three minutes in the second half.Lucas Digne rescued a point for Everton six minutes into stoppage time with a stunning free-kick from 25 yards.“The own goal is not fortunate as well,” he added. “It (the situation surrounding Richarlison’s goal) is part of the game and I understand Javi Gracia’s view in that moment,” Silva told Sky Sports.“It was possibly offside. I didn’t see it but he told me he was offside. After that, I didn’t see many chances for Watford.“The second half was different.
