Share Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest With much of the winter wheat crop across Ohio approaching critical growth stages for crucial management decision-making, a wheat expert from the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences at The Ohio State University offers a series of YouTube videos that demonstrate how growers can correctly identify their crops’ various growth stages. The series is designed as a tool to help growers understand the various stages of wheat growth and to know what management strategies can be used during each growth stage, said Pierce Paul, an Ohio State University Extension wheat researcher. The videos, which begin with wheat at Feekes Growth Stage 6, show the key growth stages of wheat throughout the growing season, said Paul, who is also a plant pathologist with the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center.Assessing riskGrowers need to know how to judge wheat’s growth stages so they can make appropriate decisions on when to apply nitrogen and herbicides and whether they will need to apply a fungicide, Paul said. Understanding wheat’s growth stages also helps growers judge the potential for injury to their plant stands under the recent cold snap that hit the region, he said. “Failure to correctly identify wheat growth stages could lead to improper timing of fertilizer and herbicide applications, which could lead to ineffective use of these inputs and even crop injury,” Paul said. “Plus, knowing the growth stage is important for assessing whether the crop is at risk for freezing injury — wheat at Feekes 6 and later are more prone to injury than wheat between Feekes 4 and 5.”The first video, Feekes Growth Stage 6, can be viewed at go.osu.edu/feekes6.Feekes Growth Stages 7 and 8 can be viewed at go.osu.edu/feekes78. The Allahabad High Court on Thursday set aside the Uttar Pradesh government’s order in which it had waived about ₹2000 crore of interest amount which the sugar mills owed to farmers due to delayed payment of cane arrears. The court order came in response to a petition filed by farmer-activist V.M. Singh challenging the waiver of interest amount which the mill owners were supposed to pay to the farmers for the years 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2014-15.Sugar mill owners are supposed to pay interest on cane arrears to the farmers in case of delay in payment. The interest amount for 2012-13 and 2013-14 of over ₹1,300 crore was waived by the State government on May 22, 2015, by accepting the request of mill owners that they were not in a position to pay interest for delay in payment of cane price to the farmers as they incurred losses allegedly due to reduction in the price of sugar. The State government, through an order in Oct. 2016, further waived over ₹700 crore for interest payment.

Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries Minister, Hon. Audley Shaw, says passage of the proposed new Fisheries Act remains a priority for the Government, in keeping with plans to institute the necessary framework to more effectively regulate the sector. Story Highlights “This Bill will not only provide the legal provision to facilitate sustainable fisheries management and development, but will also establish the Fisheries Authority that will transform the (Fisheries) Division into an entity that will be better staffed and resourced to serve the fisheries and aquaculture subsectors,” he explained. Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries Minister, Hon. Audley Shaw, says passage of the proposed new Fisheries Act remains a priority for the Government, in keeping with plans to institute the necessary framework to more effectively regulate the sector. The new legislation is expected to replace the Fisheries Act of 1976, and Mr. Shaw has indicated that the Administration will seek to continue “earnest” implementation of the supporting legislative and institutional framework.“This Bill will not only provide the legal provision to facilitate sustainable fisheries management and development, but will also establish the Fisheries Authority that will transform the (Fisheries) Division into an entity that will be better staffed and resourced to serve the fisheries and aquaculture subsectors,” he explained. The Minister was speaking during the International Fisherman’s Day Conference at the Cardiff Hotel and Spa, Runaway Bay, St. Ann on Friday (June 29).Mr. Shaw said the Government is looking to maximize the fisheries industry’s potential to contribute to Jamaica’s economic growth. To this end, he said several key areas will be explored to see how best these can be leveraged to facilitate the sector’s advancement through a programme being targeted for implementation over the next three years.“We must get to (the) point of a modern and coordinated fishing industry that will help us to achieve our aspiration for wealth creation and economic growth,” he said. The Minister argued, however, that for the industry to contribute to economic growth, stakeholders must be willing to evolve and adapt, adding that the new legislation will assist in facilitating that.Mr. Shaw said focus, in this regard, will also be placed on two supporting fisheries projects during the current fiscal year. These are a World Bank-funded community-based development project aimed at strengthening stakeholders’ resilience, and an Inter- American Development Bank-financed initiative through which the turnaround time for issuing fishing licenses will be improved to one week, while facilitating an express delivery service component.“All Jamaicans have a role to play in safeguarding our marine ecosystem including our coral reefs. But do not let it escape you that every single one of you must be a part of this process. All hands must be on deck or it will prove almost impossible or that much harder to achieve our goals,” Mr. Shaw emphasized.Meanwhile, the Minister is encouraging stakeholder compliance with the sector’s governing regulations. He said the fisher folk and other stakeholders also have a role to play in supporting the Government’s engagements, adding that “the safety and sustainability of our industry depend on all of us”.The International Fisherman’s Day Conference was held in observance of Fisherman’s Day 2018 under the theme: ‘Securing Sustainable Fisheries- Impact of Crime’. The new legislation is expected to replace the Fisheries Act of 1976, and Mr. Shaw has indicated that the Administration will seek to continue “earnest” implementation of the supporting legislative and institutional framework.
