How to Get Started with Functional Programming in Python

first_imgRelated Posts Tags:#hack#tips Growing Phone Scams: 5 Tips To Avoid 7 Types of Video that will Make a Massive Impac… klint finleycenter_img Functional programming (FP) is one of the hottest trends in programming. From Scala to Clojure to R, the interest in this approach to programming is high. In a new series on his blog, developer Dhananjay Nene writes about FP in Python. The firsttwo parts are now available, and Nene plans to publish more.Nene begins by explaining functional programming, and then moves into examples in Python.Nene makes it clear that Python, as a multi-paradigm language, isn’t the best functional programming language. “But if you want to learn more of FP or use FP techniques along with other paradigms Python’s capabilities are screaming to be heard,” he writes. In the second part, Nene covers the aspects of Python that specifically relate to FP – including the controversy over the map, filter and reduce functions. Off-The-Shelf Products Fuel The Future Of Tech At MIT

first_imgdan rowinski Epicenters of geekdom, where the future of technology are being built, exist in pockets across the United States. Yet, none drive the future quite like the geeks at the Media Lab at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The Media Lab, powered by students and professors often working on sponsorships by large brands or government grants, delves deep into aspects of technology that promise to fundamentally change the future. From 3D printing to the future of optics, holographic imaging to socially aware robots, there is a little something for everybody at one of MIT’s most progressive research centers. This 3D printer creates a foam-like material that could one day be the structural foundation of buildings.Yet, even in technology wonderland like the Media Lab, the innovation of the future is steeped in the building blocks of today. Robots, are powered by Android smartphones. Arduino processors for the do-it-yourself technologist are being built from textile materials, like fabric or paper. Cloud technology enables researchers to analyze large datasets with a speed and clarity never before available. Stereoscopic hologram images are built on the concepts like Pepper’s Ghost, developed in the 19th century. 3D image fields are being created by hacking Microsoft’s Kinect because they are cheap to acquire and implement.  Meet The DragonbotFor instance, take the Dragonbot (pictured right). This fuzzy little guy is an attempt towards a “socially aware robot” and its entire system, including its eyes and face, are powered by Android smartphones. By using a smartphone, researchers can leverage various sensors inside the device, like the camera and the touch screen interface, the microphone and the cellular connection. The Dragonbot could have many different purposes, including helping children learn a second language or assisting autistic kids with their speech issues. Imagine this scenario: you have a conversation with a Dragonbot in San Francisco (yes, you will be able to converse with these things eventually). It uses the camera in its smartphone brain to recognize your face and upload that recognition to a cloud server. You tell the Dragonbot something, perhaps that you are happy the San Francisco Giants are in the World Series. A month later you come to Boston and see a different Dragonbot. It can use its cellular connection to retrieve information from the cloud, recognize your face and ask about your feelings for how the Series turned out. That would be one smart little robot. Creepy Dragonbot prototype being developed at the mobile, dextrous, socially aware robotics department at MIT Media LabOff-The-Shelf ComponentsLet’s dig a little deeper: What functions currently available off-the-shelf from commercial companies make this robot possible?First, the smartphone and all the sensors and computing power that goes behind it. A quad-core smartphone is as powerful as the best laptop of 2000, not even including the sensors inside. The facial and speech recognition that the smartphone uses is available from companies like Google, Nuance and Facebook. The cellular connection that enables the Dragonbot to send and store information comes from the big mobile operators, like AT&T or Verizon. The cloud storage could come from any number of providers, such as Google, Apple, Oracle, Facebook or Amazon. Put all this together with the right algorithms and applications and you have the potential for an affordable robot with its own artificial intelligence that could provide distinct value to the world. This is no ordinary poster. Paper-based circuitry with conducive ink printed in silver could have a multitude of applications. The Dragonbot is just one example. All over the MIT Media Lab, off-the-shelf commercial technology is being used to create on futuristic concepts that promise to revolutionize our lives. The impact of innovations like smartphones and pervasive cloud computing are seen everywhere in the Media Lab. They are the building blocks of the next generation of technology, available simply by logging onto the Internet or walking down to your local Best Buy. Images by Dan Rowinski. Three and Four Point Editing in Adobe Premiere Pro

first_img3 and 4 point edits are a way to get a higher degree of control and precision in your Premiere Pro video editing.  Here’s how!Premiere Pro has many great tools to help editors get the right clip in the right place at the right length – three point editing is one of them.  That said, I don’t tend to use three point edits a great deal but when I do I find them to be very helpful especially when using the OUT point in the timeline. What is a 3 point edit?A three point edit requires you to specify 3 points in your project to make an edit. These points may well include the IN point and the OUT point of a clip in your project or source panel as 2 of the 3 points.IN and OUT Points of a Clip in the Project PanelBut that still leaves 1 more point to be specified, and this is done in the TIMELINE.The Timeline with an IN Point SpecifiedYou can either create an IN point in your timeline by simply selecting your timeline and going to the place where you want the edit to start and hitting the ‘I’ key to get the results shown above. Or use the OUT point method…The Timeline with and OUT Point SpecifiedYou can park your playhead in the Premiere Pro timeline at the point you want the clip to END and hit the ‘o’ key again as shown above. If you get the IN point or the OUT point in the wrong place, don’t worry, just right-click where you see the blue area indicating an IN or OUT point has been created and you will get an option to clear IN, OUT or both. So, you’ve set 3 points. The first 2 happen to be on the actual clip you want to insert and the third is on the Premiere Pro timeline. At this point you’re ready to insert your clip by selecting it and hitting the ‘point’ or ‘full-stop’ (.) key. This will create an overwrite or overlay edit with the the clip behaving as follows:If you have selected an IN point in your timeline then the IN point of the clip will match the IN point you have specified in the timeline.  The clip will overwrite into the timeline and its length will be the same length as you specified for the clip, potentially overwriting clips AFTER the place of insertion. If you have selected an OUT point in your timeline then the OUT point of the clip will match the OUT point you have specified in the timeline and the clip will over-write into the timeline from its OUT point FORWARDS – potentially overwriting the clips BEFORE the place of insertion.Inserted Clip Overwriting the Following Clip Because an IN Point Was SpecifiedFor me, I tend to use this more for inserting clips which have to end at a specific point (in other words by specifying an OUT point in the timeline) than for clips that need to start at a specific point.NOTE: You can also do three point editing in reverse of the above explanation.  Set an IN point and an OUT point in the TIMELINE and just an IN point OR an OUT point on the clip. The clip would start at the IN point of the clip and end at the OUT point set in the Premiere Pro timeline.4 Point Editing in Premiere ProWell, a four point edit will have IN and OUT points on both the clip AND the timeline. However, as you can image it is highly improbable that the length of the clip from IN to OUT and the length of the space in the timeline from IN to OUT will be the same.Timeline AND Clip with IN and OUT Points SpecifiedThus, because of this mismatch, when you hit the point or full-stop key (.) to overwrite the clip into the timeline you get the following ‘Fit Clip’ options box.Fit Clip Option BoxThis box is basically telling you, ‘OK, the clip IN and OUT points won’t match the IN and OUT you’ve specified in your timeline so what do you want me to do about it? The default setting is simply to ignore the sequence (timeline) OUT point and let the clip flow along down the timeline, but what do you want?’As you can see the options include ignoring both clip and sequence (timeline) IN or OUT points or – at the very top – ‘Change Clip Speed (Fit to Fill)’. This option will either speed the clip up to fit into a space smaller than the length of the clip OR slow the clip down if the clip is shorter than the space you want it to fit into – which can be a really useful option.  One note though, this option will affect the audio of the clip. So, if you end up speeding up the clip the audio will get higher pitched and, if you slow it down, the audio will get lower pitched which may not be what you want to do (however, you can always strip out the audio after the fact).Use 3 and 4 point editing in your Premiere Pro timeline to get precise control over your edits!last_img read more

Scorpions want to sting again

first_imgBy BEN HARRISIt seemed New South Wales Scorpions came from the clouds last year to win the women’s Elite Eight division at National Touch League. This year they won’t be so incognito. With the targets on their back, every team will be gunning for the Scorpions. They had an unblemished record in 2014, which gives them the confidence heading into this year’s campaign.Adding to that confidence is majority of last year’s side remain, which makes them definite short-priced favourites.New South Wales Mets will be nipping around once again. The perennial finalists love the Elite Eight, having played in every final since the first competition at the 2011 NTL. This year should be no different.Louise Winchester is the major drawcard for this side; she’ll work in tandem with Ash Quinlan.Mets also picked up Shellie Davis and Tayla Clifford to add to their arsenal.Queensland Chiefs have a lot of Australian representatives – 10 in all – playing and will be a team to keep an eye on.Emily Hennessey returns and she adds that much-needed spark the Chiefs were lacking last year where they were knocked out in the semi-finals.Their matches against Mets and Scorpions will be incredible showdowns. The Stingrays could be the dark horses of the competition having made the semi-finals last year. They have some talented players but it will come down to consistency.Stability was something lacking the New South Wales Country Mavericks in 2014.The Mavericks failed to win a match last year despite making the final four in 2013.A new coach and a new-looking side means the Mavericks should go better this year.New South Wales Rebels, Queensland Country Outlaws and The Alliance are not to be discounted from the field. The Outlaws made massive improvements in 2014 and with a lot of youth-based players in their side, they could pull off a few upsets. The Rebels didn’t have the best of it last year but they only missed the finals by a win.Not having Maddie Studdon (injury) is a lost but there are other Australian representatives who are able to step up.The Alliance is building every year and will be hard opposition for teams.Leah Percy captains the side, which has brought on the best talent from around the country. You can keep up-to-date with all of the latest news and information from the 2015 National Touch League in the following ways: Websites www.ntl.mytouchfooty.com www.touchfootball.com.au Social Media Facebook – www.facebook.com/touchfootballaustralia Twitter – www.twitter.com/touchfootyaus (be sure to use the hashtag #NTL2015) Instagram – www.instagram.com/touchfootballaustralia YouTube – www.youtube.com/touchfootballaus (live streaming of select games will occur, stay tuned to www.touchfootball.com.au for all of the links)Related LinksWomen’s Elite Eight previewlast_img read more
